Support from Township of South Stormont

The proposal from Biotactic can be viewed here: https://1drv.ms/b/s!Agjzck0Py7BXgYlb62mQ3Ma- r8TJWA?e=AJ0Z5W

As outlined last month, a presentation was made by John Sliter to the South Stormont Township Council on June 23rd. The slide deck used for the presentation can be viewed here: https://1drv.ms/p/s!Agjzck0Py7BXgYlYWMzc-DgVdeyI8Q?e=cagCKL

This has resulted in a motion at the Township subsequent meeting as follows: https://1drv.ms/b/s!Agjzck0Py7BXgYled3qYNi0pfXFHfA?e=uMuc49

Following the above motion, we have made an application for a Grant to the Township which was filed on July 27, 2021.

Meeting with Federal Member of Parliament – Eric Duncan

On July 22, 2021, John Sliter met with our Federal Member of Parliament Eric Duncan at his constituency office. Three key areas of discuss centred around the following:

  1. Getting the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne involved
  2. Protecting the property surrounding the spawning beds
  3. Possibility of getting walleye fingerlings from New York State (Massena St. Lawrence Walleye Association)

Our immediate priority remains to try and meet with the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne to request their support and consideration of partnering on this project. To that end, we have written to Mr. Abraham Francis of the Mohawk Council requesting a meeting and presentation. Abraham is their Program Manager for the Environment Program. We have also most recently followed this up with a letter to Grand Chief Abram Benedict which will be discussed during a pending meeting he has scheduled with MP Eric Duncan.

Formal Organization of Not-for-Profit – ‘Friends of Hoople Creek’

As discussed in last newsletter, we were pleased to welcome two members who have agreed to sit as Interim Directors on our Board until we have a formal election in the future.

  • Debbie Seguin – Lives on Colonial Drive, avid past fisher of Hoople Creek at Shaver Road.
  • Carey Runions – Lives near Hoople Bay, avid past fisher of Hoople Bay over the old flooded Railway Bed for Walleye.

We have now created a Facebook ‘Group’ Page and invited select individuals to become members of our Society. This will enable these members to have voting privileges on key issues. If you know of a particular person who might make a good General Member of our Society please send them an invite or notify hooplecreek@cogeco.ca. They should have some form of alliance to Hoople Creek/Hoople Bay.

Presentations & Meetings

We have a tentative meeting / presentation with the Grand Chief and Chiefs of the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne as per Item #2 above, set up for Aug 16th, 2021.

John Sliter will also present at the South Nation Fish and Wildlife Committee Meeting on September 7th, 2021. The South Nation Conservation Organization continues to help coordinate a collective meeting of all Stakeholders and a date for that meeting should be established soon.

Finally, we will strive to keep you posted on a regular basis as our efforts continue to raise awareness of the plight of the Hoople Creek fishery. Please share this newsletter as you see fit and encourage all of your friends and family with a concern for Hoople Creek to join us!

John Sliter, Interim President Friends of Hoople Creek Society
