Support from Township of South Stormont

In furtherance to the presentation made by John Sliter to the South Stormont Township Council on June 23rd, an application for a Grant to the Township was filed on July 27, 2021. We received a response from them and received $1,500. This was greatly appreciated as it will help get us started. The Directors of our newly formed Society took a vote and decided to best use the funds to seek Legal Corporation Status as an Environmental Activist Group and Non-Profit Organization. We have opened a Bank Account at Scotia Bank in Cornwall and we have a current balance of $1,800. Two Directors signatures are required for each cheque written.

Presentation to Mohawk Council of Akwesasne – Aug 16th

John Sliter delivered a presentation to Grand Chief Abram Benedict and Council and made three very specific requests of the Council. John Sliter thought the presentation went well and he tried to respectfully solicit their support for making the Hoople Creek a sustainable fishery. This was followed up by a formal letter which can be viewed here: https://1drv.ms/b/s!Agjzck0Py7BXgb0GpMKqlUVJeRP63Q?e=VOVHny

Presentation to General Stakeholders – Sep 3rd

A Zoom presentation was made to a much wider group of potential partners and stakeholders and this was coordinated with the help of Ms. Lisa Van De Ligt of the Raison River Conservation Authority. Lisa acted as the moderator for the meeting with the following people representing their respective agencies:

  • Matt Mulvehill – Ontario Power Generation.
  • Abraham Francis – Akwesasne Environmental Services.
  • Michelle Caveneau – South Nation Conservation Authority.
  • Brendan Jacobs – Raison River Conservation Authority.
  • Scott Gagnon – Ontario Power Generation.
  • John Sanna – Ontario Power Generation.
  • Kim MacDonald – South Stormont Township.
  • Colin Lake – Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources.
  • Mark Kaddie – Cornwall Lunker Fishing Club.
  • Jana Lantry – New York State Conservation Region Six.
  • Michael Yuille – Ministry of Natural Resources.
  • John Sliter – Interim President of Friends of Hoople Creek.
  • Carey Runions – Director of Friends of Hoople Creek.
  • Lisa Van De Ligt – Raison River Conservation Authority.

This was viewed as a great opportunity for some general discussion around some of the key issues dealing with the Hoople Creek Fishery. Lisa Van De Ligt has committed to preparing some followup notes from the meeting and these will be shared with our Society members as become available.

John Sliter is also scheduled to present at the South Nation Fish and Wildlife Committee Meeting on September 7th, 2021.

Finally, we will strive to keep you posted on a regular basis as our efforts continue to raise awareness of the plight of the Hoople Creek fishery. Please share this newsletter as you see fit and encourage all of your friends and family with a concern for Hoople Creek to join us!

John Sliter, Interim President Friends of Hoople Creek Society
