Meeting with Matthew Windle of Saint Lawrence River Institute

A Zoom meeting was held with Mr. Matthew Windle of the Saint Lawrence River Institute regarding our proposed project, and he provided some excellent information on some of the work previously done with respect to Hoople Bay. In 2019, the River Institute conducted a series of collections in our Hoople Bay and identified 7,000 fish consisting of 20 different species! Unfortunately, they did not identify any walleye. Matt told of a Grant Application in conjunction with the Cornwall Lunker Club for a similar project on Hoople Bay that was made to the Federal Department of Fisheries a few years back. They were not successful, but Matt is very supportive of the renewed interest in this idea and in our project and promised to assist. He will be helping with the preparation of new grant applications. Meanwhile, a slide deck on the report of their 2019 study can be viewed here: https://1drv.ms/b/s!Agjzck0Py7BXge4W42tK2l2CpkP7oQ

Reconstruction of Fence/Gate Along Highway 401 Ingleside Ramp

We wrote to the Ministry of Transportation complaining of an illegal entrance/exit off of the 401 in which a road/path was constructed to allow people to drive right to the spawning beds and harvest fish. We suggested this was a very dangerous and unlawful exit to the 401 Highway which could result in a serious motor vehicle accident. They promised to rebuild the gate and fence and ensure there was no illegal access to the site.

Furthermore, they promised to advise us when the work was complete.

Incorporation of Society

We could use some assistance from our Regular Membership with regard to recommending/identifying a legal person to assist in the incorporation of our society as a not-for-profit Environmental Activist corporation. We are prepared to pay for the service and are basically seeking someone within our membership to help steward the process through a legal entity. Please send any suggestions to hooplecreek@cogeco.ca.

Website Construction

Jillian Sliter is a Graphic Artist working in the Barrie, Ontario area and she has volunteered her time to create an official website for our ‘Friends of Hoople Creek’ group. If any group members have any constructive ideas on the building of this site, please send them in to hooplecreek@cogeco.ca.

Hoople Creek ‘River Watch’

We could use some assistance from EVERYONE to share some photos on our Facebook Group and onto our website. Please consider sharing any photos you might take of wildlife, fish, aquatic life, water levels, weed growth, etc, with our Group. It is all about constant vigilance and awareness as we all work together to protect this nature reserve!

Finally, we will strive to keep you posted on a regular basis as our efforts continue to raise awareness of the plight of the Hoople Creek fishery.  Please share this newsletter as you see fit and encourage all of your friends and family with a concern for Hoople Creek to join us!

John Sliter, Interim President Friends of Hoople Creek Society
