Water Levels Remain a Concern – Follow up Meeting/Presentation on November 8, 2022
We have actively participated in a number of meetings with all stakeholders to ensure our collective message to the International Joing Commission (‘IJC’) was consistent, well referenced and supported with factual research. These meetings were orchestrated by Cliff Steinburg of the Ault Island Community and he is a member of the Public Advisory Group of the IJC. We are very grateful to Cliff’s work as he was able to bring together representatives from the following agencies:
- Member of Parliament – Eric Duncan
- Member of Provincial Parliament – Nolan Quinn
- Major of South Stormont – Brian McGinnis
- Parks Canada
- Raison River Conservation Authority
- St. Lawrence River Institute
- Ault Island Community Association
- Ontario Parks
- Stormont Yacht Club
John Sliter had been asked to present some information on the impact the low water levels might have on the aquatic life within Hoople Creek/ Bay. John was accompanied by Director Katola Watson and the following link will allow readers to review the slides presented.
General Meeting of November 22, 2022
We held a General Meeting of our Society at the Masonic Hall in Ingleside, Ontario and had somewhere around 25 people in attendance. There was some great discussion on the various issues surrounding the overall health of the aquatic life in Hoople Bay and Creek. It was particularly nice to discuss the various issues with leadership from the South Lancaster Fish and Game Club and also from the Cornwall Lunkers Club. Everyone in attendance shared a common view of steps should be taken to protect this environmentally sensitive area.
A copy of the slides presented at this meeting can be reviewed at this link.
Annual Ice Fishing Derby
We have assumed leadership of the Hoople Bay Annual Ice Fishing Derby. It will be held on Saturday February 25th from 9 am until 1 pm in similar fashion to years gone by. We will posting further information on this very soon to all applicable websites as planning continues.
Meeting with Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry of November 24, 2022
Cary Runions and John Sliter travelled to Kemptville, Ontario to meet with some key staff from MNRF to discuss the various issues and concerns regarding Hoople Bay and Creek. Again, there was much discussion around what might be done to protect the walleye and what steps the Ministry might take to protect the fish sanctuary. We took efforts to stress slide #45 regarding the Political Will necessary to take steps to help our small volunteer group protect all Aquatic Life in Hoople Bay/Creek. There was several follow up items for which we will ensure we keep our membership briefed on.

Charity Status with Revenue Canada
As was previous reported, we have formally applied to Revenue Canada for official Charity Status for our newly incorporated Society. This will allow us to issue Tax receipts and to establish various types of fund raisers to finance the installation of the underwater fish counting cameras. We are ‘daring to dream’ and the costs will be extensive if we reach some of these lofty goals! We still have not received a response and application remains under review. We hope to use this status to sell tickets at the annual Ice Fishing derby to raise funds to purchase walleye fingerlings to begin a stocking program.
