Annual Ice Fishing Derby – Saturday, February 25, 2023
As previously reported, we have assumed leadership of the Hoople Bay Annual Ice Fishing Derby. Our volunteers worked very hard to make it as fun and inclusive to all fishers as was organized in previous years by Claude Collette Ron, and Mona Thieroff.
There were a total of 226 Yellow Perch caught, 11 Northern Pike and 1 Walleye. These statistics including the size of all fish has been shared with the Scientific Community. Our aim is to provide anecdotal evidence of the need for our proposed Walleye restocking program.
Our Derby netted our Society the grand sum of $2,362.11. We had $3,500 in Sponsorships and they can be viewed here.
The next time you happen to visit one of these fine establishments please pass on your appreciation for their support for our worthy cause!
Walleye Spawn Viewing Opportunity – April 15, 2023
The Directors would like to invite all / any members of our Society to come out with us on Saturday April 15th at 7:30 pm to come and see for yourselves what it is we are trying to protect. We will strive to coordinate transportation to/from the site so there will not be a need to park along the highway. You would require good rubber boots and a very strong flashlight. The boots are only needed to keep you dry from the many puddles and wet spots along the way in. Send us an email at hooplecreek@cogeco.ca if you plan on joining us.
Charity Status with Revenue Canada
We have been advised by Revenue Canada that we will have to revise our application for our Not-for-profit corporation to be awarded formal Charity status under their policies and regulations. We will be working diligently on this in the coming months and seeking further assistance as required.
New Director – Jamey Loucks
We have appointed a need Director to help us with the overall management of our Society – Mr. Jamey Loucks who is a long-time resident of the area and who also grew up along the creek and is very motivated to help us protect this important aquatic habitat. We assure our group future appointments will be done by election through the general membership as we become more firmly established.
Proposed Partnership with First Nations Group
We are continuing to seek a potential partner from the Akwesasne First Nation to work with us in our Walleye restocking efforts. There are several groups willing to provide us with fingerlings and the next step is to ensure we have the support from key stakeholders such as the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forests and the Akwesasne First Nation.
Proposed Community Hatchery
The Directors have the ultimate goal of establishing a Community Hatchery along the traditional Walleye spawning grounds. Our dream is to build a formal hatchery that would allow School children and other interested groups to learn of the life cycle for all fish using the creek to spawn. An information booklet on the Community Hatchery Program can be viewed here: http://www.communityhatcheries.com/
